The Washington Journalism and Media Conference

Discover

At the Washington Journalism & Media Conference, you discover your love for journalism; but you also discover so much more.

You discover doors that will open up innumerable opportunities to you, and new friends who turn into a family that will have your back for life.

We are WJMC.

It’s been three summers since I attended WJMC. Yes, I remember the speakers, the events, and the activities; but what I will always carry with me are the friendships and the people I met. I still talk with all of them, and they each left an impact on who I am as a person today.

So, my advice to you is to cherish those friendships, to step out of your comfort zone, and embrace the people around you. If you do, you’ll make relationships for a lifetime and fully get the experience that is WJMC.

I attended WJMC back in 2013 right after my sophomore year of high school. My favorite memory was definitely exploring the Newseum. Being able to see the history of news and communication sparked my interest in the field, and I now attend George Mason University to pursue a BA in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations.

I met some of the most amazing people while attending the conference, and it was definitely a life-changing experience!

I will never forget the experiences that I had at WJMC in 2013, simply because of how the program propelled my career in journalism. While the information and skills I learned at the conference were important, it is the people that I met who have made a lasting impact on me. My professional network grew exponentially, and I still keep in touch with the contacts that I made back in 2013.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to step outside of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to as many people as possible, especially to the speakers at the conference. Stepping outside of my comfort zone helped me to make contacts with speakers from ESPN and the Washington Post, and I’ve maintained those relationships to this date. Take advantage of the opportunities presented to you, and WJMC will truly be a life changing week!

Take in as much as you can, and don’t sit out for anything.

The people around you love you, they love what you love, and you will never experience that again.

Being surrounded by others with the same passion as you makes you want to become bigger and better.

WJMC will light the fire, and it’s up to you to keep that alive.
