Michael Latimer

Advance Team Member

Michael Latimer is a recent graduate of George Mason University and a native of Miami, Florida. A member of the Honors College, he received his Bachelor of Science studying Environmental Science with a concentration in Conservation. A Washington Youth Summit on the Environment alumnus, he always had a passion for environmental conservation and the Washington Scholars Program (WSP). Here at Mason, he has been an intern with the Admissions Office for WSP and the events management team and previously was a Junior Faculty Advisor for the conferences. In the fall of 2016, he attended the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC) in Front Royal, VA, exploring the ways that science, management and policy address current conservation issues in and out of the field. While at SMSC, he had the amazing opportunity working with the institute’s small animal population on site and was a resident advisor as well. Other opportunities he has had were being part of the Green Patriots, Mason’s club volleyball team, and worked with the restoration of pine rocklands in Miami Dade County. Michael can’t wait to work at the conference and meet all the amazing people!

Brianna “Bree” St. Clair

Event Coordinator & Advance Team Member

Brianna (“Bree”) is an Event Coordinator for George Mason’s Office of Admissions and the Overnight Advance Team Member for the Washington Scholars Program (WSP). In her role as Event Coordinator, she works alongside Selina, the Event Manger, to plan and run all recruitment events for George Mason University. As the Overnight Advance Team Member, Brianna will handle matters that may arise after normal conference hours in addition to facilitating the on-campus logistics for the conference. Brianna earned her BA in Theater with a minor in Tourism and Event Management from George Mason University in May 2015 and is currently pursuing an MA in Arts Management. Brianna can’t wait to work her second conference season with her new WSP family!

Alex Rosenwald

ALEX ROSENWALD

Senior Director of Strategic Communications and Publicity, MediaDC

Alex Rosenwald is Senior Director of Strategic Communications and Publicity for MediaDC, where he is responsible for the communications and publicity of the operating company and the Washington Examiner.  At MediaDC, he focuses on strategic communications and tactical implementation: extending MediaDC and the Washington Examiner among traditional and new media, and the staff to implement it. He earned a BS degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University. A diehard Angels fan, Alex and his wife Maddie and hound Stella live in the City of Fairfax.

Michelle Marsh

WJLA/ABC 7 News Anchor

Michelle Marsh is an Emmy Award winning journalist. Michelle joined the team in January 2016. She anchors the 4 p.m. newscast for WJLA/ABC 7 and the Late Night Report at 10 p.m. for NewsChannel 8.

Michelle came to ABC7/WJLA-TV from WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC where she spent 4 years as a morning and noon anchor. While in Raleigh, she was awarded two Emmy’s for breaking news coverage and best newscast.

Prior to working in North Carolina, Michelle anchored and reported in Atlanta, GA for WGCL. Michelle is a native New Yorker and began her career as a reporter at stations in Binghamton and Albany. She is an alumnus of Syracuse University, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism.

Michelle’s move to the DMV brings her closer to family. Her sister Rene is the Aviation and Government Regulation Correspondent for CNN based in Washington, D.C.

Nia- Malika Henderson

Senior Political Reporter, CNN

Nia-Malika Henderson is a senior political reporter for CNN. She reports broadly on the 2016 campaign for CNN’s digital and television platforms, with a special focus on identity politics — exploring the dynamics of demographics, race and religion, and reporting on the groups of people who help shape national elections.

Prior to joining CNN, Henderson was a national political reporter for The Washington Post, where she covered the White House, the 2012 presidential campaign, the 2010 mid-term elections and anchored The Post’s Election 2012 blog. She also covered the first two years of the Obama administration for Politico and was Newsday’s lead reporter covering Obama’s 2008 campaign, the Democratic primary race and the Democratic National Convention. Before joining Newsday’s national staff, she wrote for The Baltimore Sun.

Henderson graduated cum laude from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in literature and cultural anthropology, and earned master’s degrees from Yale University in American studies and Columbia University in journalism.

Savannah Behrmann

Junior Faculty Advisor

Savannah Behrmann is a rising senior at George Mason University where she is studying Communications with minors in Political Science and Global Affairs, aspiring to be a political journalist. Hailing originally from Nephi, Utah, Savannah fell in love with the opportunities, location, and diversity the DC Metro area has to offer. She was nominated to attend the Washington Journalism and Media Conference in 2013 and the following summer, was 1 of 4 students out of the 250 correspondents to return as an intern. During her first three years at George Mason, Savannah has stayed involved on campus by serving as a Mason Ambassador, working as a reporter for both Mason Cable News and The Fourth Estate, and has contributed to Her Campus and The Odyssey. She is a sister of Alpha Omicron Pi international sorority, where she has served as both the Vice President of Communications and currently is serving as the Vice President of Chapter Development for the Gamma Alpha chapter. Taking full advantage of the opportunities in the DC Metro area, she has served as a Washington Scholars Intern for three years, and served as the Editorial Intern at Northern Virginia Magazine. She was selected to be the Spring 2017 Editorial Intern on the Opinion/Editorial Page at USA Today, where her column on the “Fearless Girl” made the front page of the newspaper. Savannah continues to learn how true journalism is the backbone to a successful democracy, and hopes to one day relay true news to the people on a national and international scale.

Dr. Richard T. Craig

DR. RICHARD T. CRAIG

MA Director, Communication, George Mason University

Richard Craig directs the MA program in the Department of Communication at George Mason University and teaches at the undergraduate and graduate level about the influence of the media.  He has been a part of the university and the communications department since the fall of 2009.  Dr. Craig received his BA in Journalism from Olivet College, his MA in Telecommunications Management from Michigan State University, and his PhD in Mass Communication/Media Studies from Howard University. His research centers on mass media political economy; addressing the production, distribution and consumption of media content.  He takes particular interest in exploring the social structure/struggle embedded in media production and interpreted in media consumption.  His goal is to use research to influence the development of policy to enhance opportunities for media production and distribution by marginalized cultures. In recognition for his work, he received the 2021 Spirit of King Faculty Award as part of Mason’s annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Evening of Reflection event.

Sulome Anderson

Journalist and Author, “The Hostage’s Daughter: A Story of Family, Madness, and the Middle East”

Sulome is a journalist and author based between New York City and Beirut, Lebanon. An alumna of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, she regularly reports feature stories for publications including The Atlantic, VICE, Newsweek, New York magazine, Foreign Policy, and Vox. Her goal is to write about people existing in extreme circumstances–instead of focusing exclusively on the politics of conflict, and to convey how political strife affects the humans involved. She’s covered a wide range of topics including child suicide among Syrian refugees, the war against ISIS in Iraq and Hezbollah’s position in Lebanon. Her father is Terry Anderson, the Associated Press bureau chief kidnapped in Lebanon three months before she was born in 1985. She met him when he was released after almost seven years of captivity. Her book, The Hostage’s Daughter, is a reported investigation of her father’s captivity blended with memoir, in which she explores the very personal toll war has taken on her life.

Terry Anderson

Former Chief Middle East Correspondent, The Associated Press

Terry Anderson, 68, is a retired journalist – a former foreign correspondent in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He served as Chief Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press, as well as working as a newspaper editor, tv & radio reporter and documentary producer. He is a former Marine and Vietnam veteran. Anderson has spent more than ten years as a journalism professor at University of Florida, Syracuse University, Ohio University and the Columbia School of Journalism, among others. He is author of the bestselling book, “Den of Lions,” recounting the seven years he was held hostage in Lebanon, and has been a frequent speaker on journalism, the Middle East and public affairs. He holds numerous awards in journalism, as well as for volunteer and charitable work. He is honorary chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists, which monitors attacks on the press and works to defend journalists around the world. He is also co-chair and founder of the Vietnam Children’s Fund, which has built 50 schools in Vietnam over the past 20 years. Anderson is an enthusiastic diver (cave dive certified and experienced), and a horse lover who has raised and trained young and troubled horses. He currently lives in Orange, Virginia. Anderson holds a double B.A. in journalism and political science from Iowa State University.

April Ryan

Author & White House Correspondent, American Urban Radio Networks

April Ryan, a 30-year journalism veteran, has been the White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) since January of 1997, covering three Presidents. Ryan is also the author of the best-selling book, “The Presidency In Black and White: My Up Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America” and “At Mama’s Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White.”

Prior to working for AURN, Ryan worked for several radio stations in Baltimore, including WXYV-FM, where she was news director. Over the past 18 years, Ryan has conducted one-on-one interviews with President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, South African President Thabo Mbeki, Senator John Kerry and a host of others. Ryan has been credited by a White House historian as having the most radio interviews with then President Bill Clinton during his White House years.

Ryan is a CNN news analyst and has appeared as a roundtable panelist on NBC’s Meet the Press, ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, and on CBS’s Face the Nation. The Baltimore native is a second generation Morgan State University graduate (following in her mother’s footsteps).
